The world is changing, and so are we.

We know that architecture can change things. It can trigger growth, can teach, can empower, can improve, can solve… and our team takes this on board as our underlying conviction. We have cleaned up our brand simply to convey this vision of our work.

Behind us is the perhaps somewhat obtuse“ESTUDIOAF”. We are now adopting the leitmotif “architecture can” on israelalba.com. With this slight tweak, we have a statement that can convey various messages when spoken (architecture can change/teach/grow etc). But it also works visually. Close your eyes and it can conjure up the image of an architecture can, a can that contains, conserves, rotates, opens and fills up with our projects.

We believe in an architecture that makes things possible; an architecture that fluidly overcomes engineering, environmental and human challenges; an architecture that opens doors and turns problems into opportunities. Architecture should not make problems; it must help to solve them. Many of us believe in this kind of architecture. We aim at a skill set that does not renounce the artistic dimension but incorporates it as part of the enhancement process.

We want to share this with those who feel the same and with those who will accompany us along this ambitious journey to make lives better and add to our environment through an architecture that makes things possible. Israel Alba

Ph.D. Architect and academic. He obtained his Ph.D. in Architecture Summa Cum Laude in 2015 at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid (ETSAM). Scholarship awarded by Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) College of Architecture, Chicago, USA. Founded his own architectural firm in 2000.

Certified PASSIVHAUS Designer.

Member of the Board of Directors of the COAM between june 2019 and july 2020.

Since 2018 is Professor at the School of Architecture of the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos (URJC). Since 2016 is Guest Lecturer at the School of Architecture of the State University of New York (SUNY). Between 2007 and 2017 was Associate Professor at the School of Architecture of the Universidad Pontificia de Salamanca, Madrid Campus (UPSAM). His work has received numerous international and national prizes and awards, including COAM Award +10 2022, Architizer A+ Award 2022 and 2017, First Prize COAM Award 2020, COAM Award 2020, 2018, 2009 and 2005, NAN Award 2019, MATCOAM Sustainability Award 2018, XBIAU in 2016,

AZ Awards in 2014, PID Global Awards in 2013, Europe 40 under 40 in 2011, the Philippe Rotthier European Prize for Architecture in 2014 and in 2011, the EXPOSYNERGY A.Prize in 2010 and the ULI Europe Award in 2004.

He has lectured in India, Malaysia, Brazil, Argentina, Italy, United States, Mexico and Spain, and has been invited to be jury member on architectural competitions.

His work has been exhibited and published in national and international specialist media, such as the Spanish Pavilion of the 2018 Venice Biennale.

TEAM

The firm works as a team of highly-qualified architects seeking imaginative, responsible solutions to the needs of a changing society as they emerge. Its experts encompass significant technical know-how, but the practice never loses sight of the interaction between human, social and cultural aspects of architecture. Its philosophy recognises that design cannot exist in a vacuum. Any sustainable response towards humankind’s needs and environment must be based on a genuine understanding of the latest technology and techniques in architecture as well as in environmental engineering and landscaping. This is the only way that architectural design can help society to become more energy-efficient and economically sustainable.

The expertise in projects of the firm ranges in scale from the design of interiors to the design of large residential and industrial complexes and represents almost the complete spectrum of building types: waste treatment plants, residential housing, corporate headquarters, shopping centres, laboratories, sports complexes, educational institutions, administrative and institutional offices, industrial buildings, cultural centres, etc. We also offer consultancy services in waste management and energy optimisation as well as technical research projects.
